The Frost Entomological Museum is one of Penn State University’s lesser known (but very interesting) museums. They preserve and study insect and arthropod collections for scientific research, housing over one million specimens. They also educate students and the public about insect diversity, biology, and their importance to ecosystems.
This design process relied heavily on user research and journey mapping. I was tasked with creating a poster to raise awareness about Penn State’s Frost Entomological Museum using a specific insect: the Margined Calligrapher.
To develop a better understanding of the museum, I toured their insect collection, as well as their public exhibition. This allowed me to collect research and determine an audience. Then I began ideation using my research as a foundation. Looking at the anatomy of the Margined Calligrapher inspired me to use a delicate wing-like texture. I used procreate to digitally illustrate a map that resembled a pollinator’s wing and fit within the poster’s composition. This idea set up my final concept of combining a park map with a wing to highlight pollinators’ importance.
